Participating in Typoday 2025 at IDC, IIT Bombay was not just an event for me it was an immersive experience into the depth, diversity, and cultural power of typography. Over multiple days, Typoday brought together designers, typographers, calligraphers, educators, and students from across India and beyond, all united by one thing: a shared love for letterforms and storytelling.
What is Typoday?
Typoday is one of India’s most significant platforms dedicated to typography, calligraphy, and visual storytelling, curated by IDC School of Design, IIT Bombay. It goes far beyond aesthetics—Typoday explores typography as culture, language, heritage, politics, and emotion. From keynote lectures and research presentations to hands-on workshops and student explorations, the event creates a rare space where traditional practices meet contemporary design thinking.
Participating in Typoday 2025 at IDC, IIT Bombay was not just an event for me it was an immersive experience into the depth, diversity, and cultural power of typography. Over multiple days, Typoday brought together designers, typographers, calligraphers, educators, and students from across India and beyond, all united by one thing: a shared love for letterforms and storytelling.

It goes far beyond aesthetics—Typoday explores typography as culture, language, heritage, politics, and emotion. From keynote lectures and research presentations to hands-on workshops and student explorations, the event creates a rare space where traditional practices meet contemporary design thinking.

One of the most impactful moments for me was Day One’s workshop with Padma Shri Achyut Palav, a master calligrapher, typographer, and visual communication designer whose work has deeply influenced Indian typography.

The workshop focused on fusing two different typographic styles—understanding their individual character, rhythm, stroke logic, and cultural context, and then carefully blending them into a cohesive new expression. Working directly under his guidance was an eye-opening process. It pushed me to slow down, observe letterforms more sensitively, and respect the discipline behind expressive writing.
Beyond the hands-on work, Shri Achyut Palav’s presentation felt like a masterclass in expressive calligraphy. Watching him demonstrate control, flow, pressure, and emotion through strokes was nothing short of inspiring. It wasn’t just about technique—it was about intent, discipline, and storytelling through movement.

A particularly exciting moment for me was meeting the EK Type team, including Nupoor Dattaye, co-founder of EK Type. Having followed their work closely, interacting with them in person and listening to their journey, process, and philosophy around Indian type design was incredibly motivating. These interactions reinforced how deeply research-driven and culturally rooted good type design needs to be.
Another highlight of Typoday was the opportunity to meet and interact with several mentors and calligraphy masters present at the venue. Informal conversations during breaks, tea sessions, and networking hours turned into some of the most meaningful learning moments. Discussions ranged from script revival and regional type design to contemporary challenges in digital typography and education..

One challenge was ensuring privacy controls while maintaining an easy-to-use interface. Our team developed an accessible settings menu that lets users control visibility without overwhelming them.
Attending the conference sessions exposed me to a wide spectrum of ideas from typography as cultural preservation to experimental storytelling, political narratives, and script innovation. Each talk added a new layer of understanding about how typography functions far beyond graphic design it becomes a medium of voice, identity, and memory.
By focusing on user-centric design and seamless integration, we delivered an enhanced commerce experience that reduced friction and empowered businesses. The streamlined interfaces and intuitive navigation fostered user engagement, while the cohesive visual language elevated Crosby's brand presence. Ultimately, our efforts led to increased client satisfaction and solidified Crosby's position as a leader in the competitive commerce industry.By focusing on user-centric design and seamless integration, we delivered an enhanced commerce experience that reduced friction and empowered businesses. I left Typoday 2025 not just with new skills or insights, but with renewed motivation, meaningful connections, and a deeper respect for typography as a cultural practice. Being surrounded by such passionate people reaffirmed why I chose design—and why typography continues to fascinate me as both a system and an art form.
Typoday was a reminder that letters are not just forms on a page—they are living expressions of culture, emotion, and human thought.
